it probably won’t come as a surprise that i was not a fan of 2013 - we lost too many family members and things were overall too hard to feel bad about it’s passing. because i consider myself a positive person and would like to be bigger than 2013 would have me be i will say that i am grateful for the additions of estelle, merle and ronan to our family; for the ability to stay in the house that we love and that all of us are currently healthy. i’m feeling much more enthusiastic about 2014 and if...

i bet if you did a survey of pet owners exactly half would
say they allow their pets on the furniture and the other half would say they don’t. growing up our family was on the “don’t” side which essentially led to me
spending my childhood on the floor.
solely for this reason as an adult i’ve always been firmly on the “do”
side. we probably have more couches and chairs than the average
household. if there’s a nook or a cranny where a soft, upholstered body-holder

a little over 3 years ago i travelled to michigan to pick up a mess of a dog who has, as layer after layer has been removed, revealed himself to be an amazing being. flanagan’s previous “owners” kept him tranquilized 24-7 and in various other ways medicinally altered his brain chemistry and then they dropped him in a kill shelter with no meds. you can read about our first meeting and journey home here.
flanagan turned out to be one of the toughest to get through to...

at first glance having a garden seems like a no-brainer for us and seems to jive quite well with our lifestyle. we try our best at being environmentally friendly and the thought of living off the land is quite an attractive idea. we started a small garden two years ago and dear gravy was i overwhelmed even though (if i’m being honest) i should note that dave was doing most (insert “all” here) of the work…it was apparently more the idea of the responsibility than the actual...

my parents came over for dinner the other night (for a delicious vegan meal) and flanagan really enjoyed their company. this probably shouldn’t be acceptable behavior at the dinner table but we tend to allow flanagan to get away with things he really shouldn’t. really the one in this picture in need of discipline is my mother for petting him at the table…sheesh. ...

i apologize for my extended absence but holy canoli i think the stress of trying to think of a blog post essentially completely incapacitated me. i’ll just put this out there so it’s common knowledge – my life is pretty boring, and i mean that in the greatest possible way. yes, i live with 16 dogs but dogs are creatures of habit and so they do the same thing day in and day out and are rather uninteresting. i apparently need to work harder to make something out of nothing which i guess means...

i’m in awe of flanagan and all the progress he’s made in the 3 months we’ve had him. he’s overcome a lot and made enormous changes. speck has greatly helped (she’s got to earn her keep somehow) and my obsessive hug therapy (patent pending) seems to be cracking him. speck and he spend a good half hour every morning after breakfast chasing each other around the house like lunatics. that’s enormous progress and very dog-like. this morning i turned around and...

flanagan is slowly but surely becoming a dog. in the last week we’ve learned that he loves to play tug of war, he wags his tail constantly, you cannot take a bad picture of him and his previous owners treated him worse than originally thought (unimaginable isn’t it).
